Footprints, near Canterbury, Kent provides residential and respite care for terminally ill children and their families.
Footprints exists ENTIRELY on charitable donations.
Christy Shelley lived at Footprints for the two and half years before he passed away in May 2009.
His sister, Angelica, swims with a local swimming club.
Sue White is a teacher at the swimming club and is swimming the English Channel in a 6 person relay team at the end of July or early August 2009 and is swimming to raise money for and awareness of Footprints.
Here's a bit of background:
We'll each take it in turns to swim for an hour until we get there, overcoming the cold, tides, sun, rain, general weather, boredom and the terrible singing from the others in the boat.
We started our sea training, on the first weekend in May when the water was a very chilly 10 degrees. It's now up to about 16 degrees, which is much more bearable.
It's a strange but true fact that there are bits of Dover Harbour that are considerably colder than others - the creepy bit is that there are also bits that are inexplicably warmer .......
Remember that we are only allowed to wear a swimsuit, swim hat and goggles.

Update 4 August 2009 - we've done it!! Monday 3 August brought a sunny day that started with our pilot saying 'we'll start & see what happens' and ended 14hrs 23mins later at Blanc Nez in the dark, with a lot of gutsy swimming by the whole team and plenty of clapping from the pilot & observer in the middle!
