My story

In June I’m going to embark on a 200km trek and camping expedition in central Mongolia in aid of The Brooke Hospital for Animals, the charity that helps millions of working horses, donkeys and mules in the world’s poorest communities.

The challenge will take in wild and remote valleys and mountains, mainly inhabited by nomads, and a long way from villages and towns, so I predict another week of ‘washing’ with baby wipes!

To prove I don’t always rely on hoofed and motorised horsepower to get around, I recently completed my ‘cheat’s marathon’ - the Eastbourne & Hastings half marathons in 2hr 3min and 1hr 59min respectively – to raise money. (I didn’t get a place for London, so maybe next year…)

I’ve previously completed challenges for The Brooke in Egypt, India and Jordan and whilst some of the scenes I witnessed were extremely harrowing and will remain in my memory forever, I was also able to see first-hand the fantastic work the charity does for working equines and the families who often depend solely upon these animals for their entire income.

This year is the charity’s 75th anniversary and it has come a long way since Dorothy Brooke’s campaign to end the suffering of old war horses abandoned in Egypt after the First World War. Today the Brooke works across 10 countries providing free veterinary treatment for more than 700,000 sick, wounded and exhausted animals and advice to some of the three million people who rely on them.

Some of you may be interested in the Brooke’s HelpBoth campaign (www.helpboth.org) that highlights the humanitarian side of its work. And if anyone wants to find out more about the Mongolia challenge, or the charity’s work, please get in touch.

I appreciate this is not the best time to be asking for money, but every £1 raised for the Brooke goes an extremely long way and any donation will be greatly appreciated. I am funding all the travel and other expenses involved in the trip so all the money you donate will go to the charity.

A heartfelt thank you for any support you can provide.
