Build Up St. Anthony's is a small UK registered charity that was set up in 2004 to improve the lives and education of the enthusiastic children of Thondwe, Malawi.
The charity supports Burmese refugee students by providing scholarship matched funding. This helps students access higher education outside Burma. Educating girls and women is widely recognised as the single most powerful weapon in the fight against poverty and HIV/AIDS in Africa. Since 1993, the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) has been supporting girls through school in some of the poorest rural areas of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana and Tanzania. In 2005, more than 246,000 children benefited from CAMFED's programme of educational support, helping them to leave behind a life of poverty.
CAROM is dedicated to helping disadvantaged children in Romania: in particular, we support the Atelier Sacelean - a women’s self-help project that provides remedial education, play activities, and practical assistance with clothing etc to disadvantaged children and their families in the area of Sacele, in Transilvania. At the moment they have around 50 children on their books, but could do more if they had enough support. We are totally run by volunteers, and take no salary or expenses ourselves. Our aim for 2008 is to ensure the costs of the Atelier Sacelean – about £700 per month – are met.
